Trends in Obesity
This visualization shows changes in obesity rates over the past forty years using pooled data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey from 1973-2013 (easy access provided by Integrated Health Interview Series (IHIS) at University of Minnesota). The graphs show a sharp increase in obesity rates for male and female individuals of all races and education levels, and across all US census regions.
The impact of increased education is more pronounced for women–obesity rates fall with increased education for both males and females but the impact of higher education is stronger for females of all races. (Use the RACE FILTER to see trends by race.) Similar gender patterns in obesity are observed in analysis with BRFSS data.
